![]() Councillor Don Tempest Tel: 01664 813127 I have been asked to write a profile of myself, a sort of potted history of my recent lifestyle. Like most people, I say, ‘why would anyone wish to know about me?’ but, just in case you do- In my previous life, prior to retirement nearly 6 years ago, I spent some 40 years in the aircraft maintenance engineering industry and it was during this time that I had occasion to visit East Midlands Airport. It occured to me that the area would be a nice place to live and so, on retirement, Margaret (my wife) and I decided to move house from Oxfordshire. Somewhere in my subconscious was the memory of Castle Donnington and although I had no relatives, friends or acquaintances in Leicestershire or Nottinghamshire, I decided we would take a look. However, in the 20 years since I had been there, things had changed somewhat so, with the idea of remaining within easy travelling distance of the M1 - A1, our search for suitable property moved through an ever widening radius until we arrived at Melton on the Easter weekend of 1998, the weekend of the floods. I recall that we arrived from a holiday break from Blackpool on the Tuesday that the flood water had receded but was still evidenced by the office furniture, filing cabinets, etc. still on the pavements of the town centre shops and pubs. The market and shops were busy and everyone seemed to be in good spirits and we were immediately attracted to the area. So house hunting began, culminating in buying a large old house on Asfordby Hill, moving in on 4th July 1998. In between my D.I.Y. work on the house, I spent time exploring the area, the history of the old Holwell Works and the Asfordby Parish countryside. After 2 years and a lot of work we decided that maybe the house and garden were too big for the two of us and we bought one of the houses that were just being built in Jubilee Avenue, Asfordby. Although we have been Asfordby residents for such a relatively short time, we have made new friends and take an active part in the community of, what I believe is, a great place to live. |
